The riders ascend ‘The Knowle’ 3 times to complete the full race distance of 44 miles. Mickael finished in the bunch claiming 30th position out of a full field of over 65 riders. A great effort and well done. Full results can be found here

Surrey League Dunsfold Park 4th Cat Series Race 2 - Friday 17th May Thames Velo also hosted the 2nd race of the 4th Cat series; the final race the club was committed to as part of our affiliation to Surrey League. There was only one rider this week representing the Velo... Nick Silva. Nick, new to racing, pretty much sat mid pack for the duration of the race getting the feel of bunch riding; after all this was only his second event and first on the Dunsfold circuit. Mid pack was where Nick finished in the bunch sprint. Well done Nick, another race in the bag. Full results can be found here

Surrey League Dunsfold Park Vets Series Race 2 - Wednesday 15th May Martin Porter raced in the Vets series down at Dunsfold Park, the race being over 30miles. Unfortunately he missed the race winning break when he felt he had the legs. Martin had to be content on this occasion coming in with the bunch. Full results can be found here

Pedal Heaven Eelmore Circuit Series 4 - Wednesday 15th May New racers Rob & Phil Mosley looking to broaden their race experience decided to tackle the short but punchy Eelmore Circuit. On a fast circuit with sprints out of each bend and it being a 3rd/4th Cat race they were always going to be up against it, but all good experience. Rob unfortunately dropped off the back midway through the race but Phil managed to hold on to the tail of the pack finishing with the bunch. Full results can be found here

Fred Whitton - Sunday 12th May This year's event turned into a bit of a slog, strong winds and driving rain made for treacherous riding conditions which made the day not to pleasant and ultra hard. Nevertheless, 4 Thames Velo riders conquered the worst riding conditions in many years finishing with creditable times:

NameTime
Paul Buckley8hrs 3mins
Tim Brass8hrs 18mins
Martin Porter8hrs 48mins
Paul Todd9hrs 46mins

Chapeau!!

Surrey League Dunsfold Park 4th Cat Series Race 1 - Friday 10th May Thames Velo hosted the first race of the 4th Cat series, a Surrey League commitment. We had 3 club members riding, Steven Green, and the Mosley brothers Rob & Phil.

Unfortunately Steven took a tumble on the first lap so he saw the showers early. Rob & Phil in their first race rode well, coming together at the front on the penultimate lap. Both finished well in the bunch sprint. Welcome to the world of racing! Full results can be found here

Team Townend Pushbike Challenge – Saturday 27th April Martin Porter reports: Two Thames Velo riders travelled up to the Lake District to take part in the Team Townend Pushbike Challenge ridden in memory of Christian and Niggy Townend, brothers killed in a double tragedy in December 2010 when a coach was driven into them. In 2012 the coach driver was acquitted of all charges against him, claiming to have had the sun in his eyes and we felt it important to support this ride.

At the start, nearly ready to go

The ride supports the Charity roadpeace whose sterling work includes lobbying to improve the criminal justice process after vulnerable road users have been killed or harmed. They really do deserve our full support.

Honister Pass looms ahead

Me - in the Lakes (Hardknott – did I mention that after the 40 mile challenge Paul led me a further 60 miles over Cold Fell and other bumps to the top of Harknott?)

It was a real pleasure to meet several members of Christian and Niggy's family. The sun shone almost throughout, and the friendliness and generosity of all involved was quite exceptional. Lovely home made chocolate biscuits alongside the bananas at the feed half way around and an enormous spread of homemade/prepared food to welcome us at the finish. I thoroughly enjoyed the day and am now the proud owner of a Team Townend jersey.

Kitsmead Lane E/1/2/3/4 Handicap Race - Thursday 25th April There was a bumper turnout for the first of the Handicap races on the local Kitsmead Lane circuit. There was a full field of 80 riders with a number of riders disappointed to be turned away. Both Paul Buckley and Nick Silva (who was competing in his debut road race) were seeded into the first group which lead off the race over the 8 laps of the 2.8mile circuit. Both were prominent in the group throughout the race with their efforts contributing to the group staying away. A final lap sprint saw Paul Buckley finish in 13th with Nick rolling over the line in 17th for an excellent result in his very first race. Well done!

Maidenhead CC 25 mile TT – Sunday 21st April 2013 For somebody not riding much, our Redders pulled out a cracking time of 1:06:14 gaining 9th place over the 25 miles of the HC001 circuit. Hopefully this will spur Paul on to find more time to get out on the bike and start rolling back those glory years.

Sportives – Sunday 21st April 2013 It was a busy weekend on the Sportive scene, made all the better due to the fabulous sunshine. Three Thames Velo riders took on the full 83 mile route of the Princess Risbrough Sportive over the Chiltern Hills which included 5,904ft of climbing. The results were:

Nick Silva 4hrs 47mins (Gold)

Matt Fredrickson 4hrs 48mins (Gold)

Ian Carswell 5hrs 48mins (Silver)

Also, Mark Merriman rode in the White Horse Challenge Sportive starting in Shrivenham, Wiltshire with the route crossing the Marlborough and Lambourne Downs. Over 90 miles and with 1,400 metres of climbing Mark finished in 6hrs 13mins gaining a Silver.

Maidenhead CC 10 Mile TT – Thursday 18th April 2013 On an extremely windy evening 4 riders braved the elements over the 10 mile distance on the H10/10 Drift Road course. On standard road bikes the results were:

18th Nick Silva 29:52

20th Ian Carswell 30:39

Hillingdon Duathlon Race Series – Monday 15th April 2013 Mickael Metayer was victorious in the first race of the Monday evening Duathlon Series run by Hillingdon Triathletes down at the Hillingdon Cycle circuit. The first race of the series was 'relay', that's two people doing an equal share of both riding and running. To even out the field the teams weren't selected until on the night. The race was 1 lap running the 1 mile circuit then handing over for a riding leg of 5 laps, another handover for a further 5 laps on the bike before a final 1 mile sprint. Paired with Chris of Hillingdon Triathletes, Mickael opted to run first and flew round the circuit in 5.06 minutes handing over to Chris in 3rd position. Chris then rode hard for 5 laps, by the time he'd handed over to Mickael they were still holding 3rd. Mickael once on the bike then applied the power like we know he can, by the end of the first of 5 laps he was in the lead, eventually handing over a comfortable buffer for Chris to finish the last leg with 20 seconds to spare. What a victory, well done!

Prudential RideLondon Surrey 100 Club Challenge – Sunday 4th August 2013 Thames Velo has registered two teams into what is probably the most prestigious Sportive event on this years UK calendar. The RideLondon Surrey 100 Club Challenge is on closed roads and follows the Olympic Road Race Route, the event being part of London’s festival of cycling celebrating the legacy for cycling created by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games. The weekends cycling activities will be broadcast live on TV both in the UK and internationally. The club challenge is for teams of 4 to complete the course in the best possible team time. We will be informed on the 26th April if our entries have been successful. Fingers crossed everybody!

Wiggle New Forest Spring Sportive – Saturday 13th April 2013 Club member Nick Silva - in atrocious wet weather gained a 'gold' award in the Wiggle New Forest Spring Sportive on Saturday. Starting in Brockenhurst Hampshire, the epic route of 86 miles with an elevation gain of 3,040ft followed the quiet forest roads of the New Forest National Park. Nick had to be on his best behaviour as cyclists are becoming an increasingly controversial sight in the New Forest. Nick finished in a steady 5hrs 24mins. Well done Nick.

Maidenhead CC 10 Mile TT – Thursday 11th April 2013 There was a good Thames Velo presence down at the HCC234 (Shurlock Row) circuit for the 2nd Maidenhead CC 10 mile TT last night. Improved times were seen across the board for all riders after last weeks dismal weather. Mark Wade joined in on the fun too for his debut TT. On the support front we had the presence of Coach Lambourne, Redders was doing his turn with the starters watch and we also had Ian Carswell out on the bike giving much needed mobile support. A slick operation run by Maidenhead CC with results up on their website same night... great stuff!

9th Paul Stonell 25:11

17th Paul Buckley 27:07

23rd Mark Wade 28:52

30th Russell Smith 32:09

Also Phil Mosley (Robs brother) finished in 16th with a time of 26.55mins. It's the Drift Road circuit next week. Full results here

Surrey League – Longcross Test Track, Sunday 7th April 2013 There were 3 Thames Velo racers at Sundays Surrey League races at Longcross. Paul Buckley was riding the 4th event but unfortunately punctured 30 minutes into the race. The circuit is too long for a lap out and no neutral service so a puncture results in a walk. Martin Porter and Mickael Metayer were in the 3rds so Paul stayed on to support. Unfortunately a number of crashes marred the race. The first was in lap 3 on the technical section at the back of the circuit. Martin wasn't able to get back on and ended up in a group of 10 until they were duly lapped. A few more laps and Martin fell off the back again then called it a day. Mickael was pretty active at the sharp end of the race but wisely kept out of the final sprint on what had been a very twitchy day.

Maidenhead CC 10 Mile TT – Thursday 4th April 2013 Unfettered by the extremely cold weather and driving 14mph headwind down Howe Lane, 3 members of Thames Velo on standard road bikes gave it there all on their maiden TT. On the HCC234 circuit over 2 laps 22 hardy riders braved the elements.

8th Paul Buckley 28:38

14th Robert Moseley 30:23

15th Phillip Moseley (Roberts brother under 'come and try') 30:41

21st Russell Smith 34:31

With less wind and a little more experience we should see those times tumble. So well done everybody! Full results here

Beyond Spring Crits 2 Hillingdon – Sat 30 March 2013 With the weather marginally letting up over the Easter weekend Paul Buckley once again ventured down to Hillingdon for the 4th Cat race, this time with team mate Steve Green in tow testing out his new bike. The improved weather saw a larger field than the previous week with over 30 riders on the start line. Sharing the circuit with the ladies and with the speed at 30mph + down the back straight due to a strong tailwind, it was impossible for anybody to get a gap of any sort and hold it, turning into the headwind the front riders simply stalled which lead to tight bunching. This was the pattern of the race with everything staying together for a final and very nervy last lap. Again opting for safety Paul rolled in at the back. Steve caught out by the speed of the run in just dropped off the back and rolled in shortly after.

Beyond Spring Crits 1 Hillingdon – Sat 23 March 2013 With temperatures barely above freezing and an icy wind chill club member Paul Buckley undeterred raced down at Hillingdon in the 4th Cat race. Due to the poor weather the race was reduced to just 30 minutes. Nonetheless the race was keenly contested mostly in an effort to stay warm. The race stayed together until the last bend with Paul opting for safety finishing in a creditable 13th place. There were many that dropped out with one serious case of hypothermia in the 2nd race demonstrating how cold and challenging the conditions were.

The Puncheur and V02 Sportive - Sunday 10th March 2013 On Sunday, club members Ian Carswell and Paul Buckley each tackled their first sportive of the 2013 season. Ian did the Puncheur with its hilltop finish on Ditchling Beacon in East Sussex. Over a challenging course of 65 miles which included climbing 5,600 feet Ian finished in 5hrs 1min claiming a merit award. On the same day in Hildenborough, Kent, on an equally challenging course Paul tackled the V02 Sportive. Over 70 miles with 5,900ft of climbing Paul finished in 4hrs 12mins, the 14th fastest time claiming a Platinum award. Well done guys.

Thames Velo Training Camp, Spain, Sun 24th Feb – Sat 2 Mar 2013 Eleven members of the club escaped the cold British winter weather courtesy of British Airways in late February. Destination was Javea, Spain for the annual Thames Velo Cycling Camp. Although the weather wasn’t quite as friendly as it could have been, the locale more than delivered. After 3 days of excellent riding poor weather resulted in an enforced rest day which unfortunately ran into the following day but the results of our efforts still showed almost 20 hours in the saddle, an accumulated distance of 300 miles with 25,000ft of it upwards. Perhaps the best part of the training camp was the simplicity of it – maximize on-the-bike gains, time spent not riding resting, recovering and eating. If an army fights on its stomach, we certainly trained on it. We ate like kings every night, from Italian to Spanish to the good old curry house! Overall the experience was great, the company splendid and the training excellent. Our thanks go to Big Al, an incredibly helpful guide who made life so much easier for us (apart from those ramps!) and to Keith for the shuttle service from and to the airport. So roll on next year says everybody!

2013 Road Race We've updated our page with more details of the forthcoming Central Region Road Race Championships that we're hosting on May 19th 2013. Look here

Annual Club Dinner – Saturday 19th January 2013 Last weekend the club held its annual dinner at the Bird in Hand Country Inn, Reading. A three course meal was on the menu as was the annual prize giving and our now traditional charity raffle - this year in aid of SportsAble, which by the way resulted in a cheque in the post for £94. The venue, the ambiance, the chat and banter were all perfect and it was a triumphant evening too with the deserving members scooping up all the prizes. Congratulations to all the winners. Huge thanks go to our dinner organisers Betty and Dave Lambourne for doing such an amazing job. That now brings down the curtain on the 2012 season. With the snow due to disappear shortly... roll on 2013.

Don’t forget, if this shindig wasn't enough, we meet each month for a "beer and a chat" at the Jack O'Newbury Pub in Binfield from 7.30pm onwards. You’ll find us next to the log fire! Next one is Monday 4th February.

Fred Whitton 2013 - UPDATE As is always the case, this event is quickly oversubscribed and entries end up having to go through a random draw process. The good news is that all the entries from Thames Velo have been accepted. A huge thank you goes once again to Mike Mills for co-ordinating the clubs entries and getting us all in. The riders are: Martin Lambert, Martin Porter, Paul Buckley, Mark Merriman, Andy Fowkes, Tim Brass and Paul Todd. Good luck everybody... now get some hills in!!

Imperial Winter Series Race 8 - 12th January 2013 Once again Martin Porter was the clubs sole representative down at Hillingdon this week. A strong easterly wind played havoc with all races making it difficult and testing racing conditions. Martin found himself towards the rear when splits started to develop in the 3rd Cat race. Caught on the wrong side of one he lost touch. Despite being part of a small chasing group they couldn't quite get back on. A race I'm sure Martin will wish to forget.

Andy Brown Lanzarote Club La Santa Training Camp - 3rd January 2013 Club run organiser Andy Brown took an early January break and headed out to Lanzarote Club la Santa for some training in the winter sun. The week coincided with Andy Cook’s bike week, so plenty of cycling, as well as some running, swimming coaching and sessions in the gym. Andy's climbing prowess seeded him into the top cycling group led by Magnus Backstedt, famed for winning the cobbled classic Paris-Roubaix back in 2004. By the end of the week Andy had cycled near 400 miles, climbed in excess of 30,000 feet, ran around 30 miles and completed numerous lengths of the pool. Andy returned hugely inspired and motivated... so watch out on the club runs!!

Imperial Winter Series Race 7 - 5th January 2013 Martin Porter and Andy Fowkes were once again representing the Velo in the 3rd Cat race. Unfortunately this week was quite a negative race with nothing being allowed to get away. A bunch sprint always looked on the cards. There was a coming together of the Elite race and the 3rds on the final bends which lead to confusion and ultimately indifferent performances with self preservation the order of the day. Oh well, there’s always next week!

Imperial Winter Series Race 5 and 6 - 29th December 2012 and 1st January 2013 Race 5 had riders contesting strong gusty winds and squally rain making it difficult racing conditions. With the early start for the 4th Cat riders they unfortunately bore the brunt of the poor conditions. Paul Buckley was the only Thames Velo rider who braved it, finishing in a creditable 16th position. The following week, Race 6 saw Andy Fowkes claim an excellent 10th position in the 3rd Cat race. Club Chairman Martin Porter said "first point of the year on the first day of the year bodes well." Keep up the good work guys!

Imperial Winter Series Race 3 - Saturday 15th December 2012 It was good to see Club Chairman Martin Porter back racing this weekend after recovering from a bad crash during the John & Dulcie Walker Road Race, one of the final road races of the 2012 season back in September. The wounds heal quickly but the mental ones take a little longer. With around 30 riders in the 3rd Cat race Martin chose to sit safe towards the back with the aim of finishing unscathed and regaining some race confidence. Even so Martin still managed to finish just behind the bunch, at the same time avoiding those sprint situations that get the butterflies going! Well done Martin. Results can be found here

Fred Whitton Sunday 12th May 2013 – Last call It's still not too late to join the Thames Velo team but time is quickly running out. At the moment we have a team of 4. Mike Mills is doing a sterling job co-ordinating all the entries so if you’re interested in joining the team at this late stage then you need to move sharpish. Speak with Mike ASAP.

2013 Membership renewals Believe it or not, 12 months has passed as we have furiously or sedately in some cases, peddled our way through 2012. Renewals are due by the 31st Dec 2012, it’s not to far away - so get your skates on. The process of renewal has been made as easy as possible, that means no forms to fill in! Payment can either be by bank transfer (our preferred method) to Thames Velo, Lloyds Bank, Sort Code 30-97-73, and Account Number 02072916 or by sending a cheque made payable to "Thames Velo" direct to Dave Lambourne. Prices held over from last year at £13 for first and £8 second claim. Don’t delay, renew today!

Assistant Road Race Commissaries Training - 8th December 2012 On Saturday 8th December 2012 one of our club members Steven Green, attended an Assistant Road Race Commissaries course which was held at Hillingdon cycle circuit and run by British Cycling. Attending this course now gives Steven the necessary skills to help at any region level road race and sends him on the path towards becoming a Regional Commissaire. Steven now has to follow a structured process of gaining experience with set criteria over a series of 6 or more races. Once qualified Steven will be our second Regional Commissaire in the club, which demonstrates the Thames Velo ethos and commitment to putting something back into cycling. Good luck on your journey Steven.

Imperial Winter Series Race 2 - Saturday 8th December 2012 Andy Fowkes was the club's sole representative across all race categories at the 2nd race of the Imperial Winter series held down at Hillingdon. Once again Andy finished mid pack in a sprint finish in the 3rd Cat race. A race report and results can be found here

Annual Club Dinner and Awards 19th January 2013 - Update Invites to the club dinner have now been emailed to all members. YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU! We now need to know whether you're coming or not? Please send names, numbers and whether you require a vegetarian option to Betty and David Lambourne ASAP. Payment can be made by cheque or bank transfer. A full menu is to follow. Any questions speak to Betty or Dave, our organisers and a damn fine job they do too!

Imperial Winter Series Race 1 - Saturday 1st December 2012 On a cold and breezy day (well, it is December!) a full field of 78 riders lined up in the 4th Cat race; this gives an indication of the popularity of the series. In the 4th Cats Richard Willis was representing the club in his first ever road race and Andy Fowkes was flying the Velo flag in the 3rd Cats. For Richard it was a voyage into the unknown, but alas this race wasn't to be - with Richard running up short after 30 minutes struggling to handle the frequent accelerations. Stick with it Richard, get a few more races under your belt and eventually we'll hear a success storey. As for the 3rd Cats, Andy employed his wily race craft which left him sitting comfortably in the bunch in the gallop up to the finish line. Well done Andy. For the full report go to the UKCycleSport site here

Inverse RT Winter Points Grabber 3 - Sunday 18th November 2012 Mickael Metayer raced in the 3rd of 4 events of the (very!) late season Inverse Winter Points Grabber Series held at Hillingdon on Sunday. After a season long break from racing Mickael decided to use this particular race as an exercise to gauge his current level of fitness. On a bright and crisp winter day Mickael managed to finish in a creditable 13th place in the 3rd Cat race. Well done, we look forward to seeing you back racing again in 2013. For the full result go here

The Fred Whitton Challenge 12th May 2013 Are you interested in joining the Thames Velo team in 2013? The Fred Whitton is a classic on the UK sportive calendar and is widely believed to be Britain's toughest sportive. It follows a challenging 112 mile route around the Lake District taking in all the major mountain passes and in the process racking up almost 13,000 feet of climbing. Frighteningly technical descents follow climb after climb with some gradients in excess of 30%. If you're a glutton for punishment then this is the ride for you. Names to Mike Mills ASAP. Further information here Fred Whitton. We are there every year, testomonials can be found here.

Granfondo Sportful 2013 Plans are underfoot to send a Thames Velo team to ride the Dolomites in the Granfondo Sportful in June 2013, the last time we sent a team was way back in 2008. If you fancy a trip out to Venice more details can be found on the forum here.

Winter Training Camp - Spain 2013 The dates for this years training camp have been set for Sun. 24th February 2013 to Sat. 2nd March 2013 in Javea Spain. Why not join us and use it to shorten those winter blues, more details can be found on the forum here.

Race Skills Training day Club Coach Dave Lambourne is running a race skills training day down at Hillingdon under Prime Coaching on Saturday 17th November 2012. New members Robert Mosley and Ceri Rees will be there, good luck to them and we hope the day goes well and you learn loads. We look forward to seeing you out racing in the Thames Velo colours soon.
